City of Osijek

Osijek lies twenty-five kilometres upstream from the place where Drava flows into Danube in East Slavonia - a city and a port, the economic, transport and cultural centre of Slavonia. The lowland of East Croatia, surrounded by rivers, is a true oasis for tourists who want to replace the city hustle and bustle with the quiet of greenery and a relaxed stay in intact nature at least for a while. It consists of the Uptown, the Fort (Tvrda), the Downtown and New Town (19th century), and Retfala. The important city institutions include the University, the Croatian National Theater fouded in 1907, the Museum of Slavonia, the City and University Library building, built in 1905, the Museum of Fine Arts, established in 1954, the old part of Osijek, Tvrđa, a unique complex where the Rector's Office and some faculties are situated,  the grammar school dating back to 1729, etc.

Osijek - city of parks

Thanks to 17 parks, the city of Osijek is recognised as one of the greenest cities in Croatia. If you go from Tvrđa to the city centre along European Avenue, you will discover the names of the three Croatian kings after whom the largest parks in the city are named.
